The Criminal Cases Review Commission has referred the convictions of Nazeem Khan and Cameron Bashir to the Court of Appeal.
Mr Khan was convicted of five charges of dishonesty and deception relating to mobile phones and credit cards and sentenced to 12 months in prison.
Mr Bashir was convicted of conspiracy to obtain property by deception and was sentenced to nine months in prison.
Both men were convicted at St Albans Crown Court on 4 June 1999. Both men sought leave to appeal on 15 December 1999. A Single Judge dismissed the appeal. Mr Khan applied to the Commission on 22 December 2003. After being approached by the Commission, Mr Bashir asked that his conviction also be reviewed, on 12 July 2004.
The Commission has now reviewed a range of issues in the case, including the subsequent conviction of a police officer for an unrelated offence of dishonesty, and has referred the case back to the Court of Appeal.
Mr Khan’s legal representative is Andrew Wheldon’s Solicitors, 11-13 Alexandra Road, Hemel Hempstead, Herts, Tel 01442 242999. Mr Bashir is not currently represented.
