Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) The Criminal Cases Review Commission is the independent public body set up to investigate possible miscarriages of justice in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Commission assesses whether convictions or sentences should be referred to a court of appeal.

The Criminal Appeal Act 1995
This is the Act that set up the Criminal Cases Review Commission and which gives us our powers to obtain information and to refer cases back to the Court of Appeal.  The other Act that relates directly to the Commission is the Criminal Cases Review (Insanity) Act 1999  which is relevant only to verdicts of 'guilty but insane'.

Home Affairs Committee Report on the CCRC
The CCRC is independent but is accountable to parliament and has to report regularly to the Home Affairs Select Committee.  This is the Report published by the Committee in the1998/99 Session.  Transcripts of the evidence given by the CCRC to the Select Committee in more recent years can also be found on this site.

Innocent is a Manchester-based organisation which supports and campaigns for people in prison who it believes to be innocent.  It is made up of families, friends and supporters of people it believes to be wrongly convicted.

Liberty
